Guided Tours
Students will receive a guided tour of the Fish Hatchery & Aquarium. Our educators can answer your students many questions. Students will also feed our hungry trout. Please choose from one of the following topics for discussion during your guided tour.

Aquaculture
1 Hour, $5 per person

Hatcheries are vital to the management of our aquatic resources. Students are introduced to the workings of a small demonstration fish hatchery. Some of the fascinating complexities affecting management of aquatic species and habitats are discussed, including pertinent issues such as pollution and wetland development.

Adaptations
1 Hour, $4 per person

All animals and plants have characteristics or behaviors which improve their chances of survival and reproduction. Using live specimens, we will discuss these traits, which are called adaptations.

Hatching Process
1 Hour, $4 per person

Learn how trout spawn in the wild. Discuss trout development, from sac fry to adult, and compare hatchery breeding to spawning in the wild. A tour or the Hatchery will reveal trout in different stages of development.

Herpetology
1 Hour, $4 per person

Herpetology is the study of reptiles and amphibians. Live specimens will be used to demonstrate the differences and similarities between these two fascinating and often confused classes.

Vertebrates
1 Hour, $4 per person

All five classes of vertebrates can be seen at the Hatchery. In this program, we will compare and contrast the diverse vertebrate classes using Hatchery exhibit animals and skeleton models.

Seasonal Programs

Our seasonal programs are very popular for students of all ages. Make reservations for these programs early! These programs do not include a guided tour of the Fish Hatchery & Aquarium.
We do invite your students to spend sometime exploring our exhibits at the conclusion of the program. Fish food may be purchased in our Gift Shop.

Egg Stripping
1 Hour, $5 per person; Late Oct - Mid Nov

This is a unique Hatchery program. Students can witness one of the most fascinating aspects of aquaculture. Hatchery staff demonstrate a centuries-old technique of fish breeding: egg taking and fertilization. A discussion of trout development, from sac fry to adult and a comparison of Hatchery breeding and spawning in the wild, follows the live demonstration.

Pond Life
1 Hour, $5 per person; Mid April-Oct

There is a vast diversity of life forms hidden from our eyes. This program introduces students to the microscopic and macroscopic inhabitants of a pond. Their life cycles and ecological interactions will be discussed. Students will observe and identify some of these creatures as our staff uses our microscope.

Freshwater Ecology
2 Hours, $7 per person; Mid April-Oct
A Non-refundable Deposit of $50 is required to make reservations for this program.

The Freshwater Ecology program is designed to increase the students' understanding of concepts such as food chains, ecosystems, and producer-consumer relationships. Students actively investigate animals and plants that live and interact in different aquatic sites. Emphasis is placed on the relationships of the biologic to the abiotic world. Using dipnets, seines, and buckets, students examine the inhabitants and characteristics of these freshwater areas. Be prepared to get wet. Old shoes and clothes are necessary.
